Reading Preview

Reading Preview:

  • Variable base formation depending on their opponent, potential 3-4-3 base.

  • Low pressing intensity out of possession.

  • Few passes per sequence in possession.

- Reading can adjust their base formation depending on their opponents shape.

- But they often set up with a back 3, becoming a back 5 out of possession.

- Hendrick often drops deep to help out defensively.

Possible lineup:

- Reading allow 16.5 passes per defensive action (PPDA), the 2nd most in the league.

- High PPDA indicates a low pressing intensity.

- After losing possession, Reading tend to drop back to regain defensive solidity - in a 5-4-1 - almost immediately.

- The two wide midfielders (possibly Meite and Ince) drop into a midfield 4.

- Any pressing is done, once in their 5-4-1 shape, from deep.

- Once in possession, Reading look to find their two wide midfielders either side of Carroll.

- Reading get bodies forward with deep runs from central midfielders.

- In possession, Reading average 2.49 passes per sequence, only 4 teams average fewer.

- With an average of 40.8%, Reading also have less possession than any other Championship team.

Conclusion:

• It is highly likely that Norwich will dominate the ball, but they'll need to transition quickly to avoid being frustrated by Reading's low block.

• Due to Reading's defensive solidity, out of possession, Norwich's counter press will be important.
